The district headquarters is Dehradun, which has also served as the provisional capital of Uttaranchal since its founding in 2000, and may well become the permanent capital.

Buddha Temple

Buddha temple at Clement Town is a tourist place which one must visit. It has a Beautiful Stupa standing 220 feet in height which is considered to be the tallest in entire Asia. It has total 5 floors and in each floor you can see Lord Budha's and Guru Padmasambhava's statue. This temple was built in the year 1965 and is itself the replica of a monastery in Tibet. The architectures that made this beautiful temple were from Japan whereas the builders were from india. It took three years and 50 artists to paint this structure with gold paint. The wall paintings inside the temple which depicts the life events of lord Budha attracts tourists from all over the country.

Chakrata is the 112-year-old town that is a haven for nature buffs and trekkers. Several sites worth a visit near Chakrata are Mundali, Tiger falls and Lakhamandal.

Situated 7kms from Dehradun on the Dehradun-Delhi road is the famous temple of Chandrabani. Legend has it that spot was inhabited by Maharishi Gautam, his wife and daughter Anjani who are widely worshipped by the people. It is believed that the Goddess Gahad manifested herself on this spot which is now popularly known as the Gautam Kund. Every year devotees from various parts of the world come and take a dip in the holy Kund. 2 Kms away from the main road, located in the midst of Shivalik hills, the place is a beautiful tourist spot.

The museum can be visited from Monday to Friday where one can witness the innumerable species of vegetation on the Earth.

Lacchiwala is located at a distance of 3 kms. from Dehradun. It's a popular picnic spot which lies in Hardwar/Rishikesh Road. This place is visited by hundreds of tourists round the year. One can enjoy swimming here. When you enter this place there is a big family park with beautiful flowers and swings for children after which comes a river where people enjoy swimming. Canteen and parking facility is available for visitors. For tourists accommodation in the Forest Rest House is also available. One can easily reach this place by taking a bus or other transport from the main city.

Lakhawar fair is a village fair, held during the months of September- October and is very popular in the neighbouring area of Chakrata, 78 km. from Mussoorie.

Laxman Sidh Temple lies in the middle of thick forests. It is located at a distance of 12 kms from Dehradun on the way to Rishikesh. It is the cremation site of the Saint-Swami Laxman Sidh. One can easily reach this place by taking any local transport after which one motorable route of 1.5 kms. bends on right to reach the temple. Every especially on sundays one can see lots of people visiting this temple.



M.D.D.A Park

M.D.D.A Park is near Jakhan in Dehradun. It is built and managed by Mussoorie Dehra Development Authority, Dehraun. It’s a wonderful place to visit. When you enter the park you follow a narrow path which leads towards a big grassy land with variety of flora and fauna. From here one can witness seasonal water stream flowing and a mountain range. For childrens swings are installed in one corner. Canteen and parking facility is available. Entry and parking fees is very nominal.

Malsi Deer Park is at a distance of 8 kms. from the city center on the road to Mussoorie. Its a picnic spot covering big area full of trees and plants and an artificial pond. For children swings are there which are liked by them very much. It has its own paid canteen and parking. It’s an ideal place to sit and relax on the lap of nature.

Robber's Cave is at a distance of 8 kms, from the center of the city. It’s a wonderful picnic spot full of thrills. One can reach this place by taking a bus from city till Anarwala village and then by taking few minutes walk to Robber's Cave. It is believed that in this place Guru Dronacharya had done penance.

Santala Devi Temple is situated at a distance of 15 kms. from Dehradun and can be reached by taking 2 kms. walk from Punjabiwala. The temple has a lot of cultural and religious significance. It is believed and said that Santala Devi and her brother were turned in to stone images. Inside the fort shrine was built and it is believed that on Saturdays the transformation of the Goddess into stone occurs.

Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Temple is in Rajpur Road, Dehradun few kms away from the center of the city. When you move towards Mussoorie one diversion comes in between. Don't take left just keep on moving strainght. After few kms. on right hand side comes the Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Temple. There is one big hall where stands one big statue of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba in one corner. This hall is good for meditation where one can meditate for hrs. This place is easily reachable. One can take any public transport to reach this place.

Tapkeshwar Temple is a cave temple which is devoted to Lord Shiva. It is located at a distance of 5.5 kms. from the city center in the Garhi Cantonment area after which a long flight of stairs to ascend. It is on the bank of a seasonal river which enters the cave temple where the water drips from the ceiling on a Shiv Linga. The best time to visit the place is during Shivratri when a big fair is held and people in large numbers participates.
